Emeritus Professor Oladipo O. Akinkugbe was born on 17th July, 1933 in Ondo State. The Professor of Medicine, University of Ibadan took his medical degree from London University in 1958 and after residency at The London and King’s College Hospitals, went up to Balliol College in Oxford University in 1962, for the D.Phil, working under Sir George Pickering FRS, Regius Professor of Medicine.
His Thesis was on “Angiotensin and the Kidney”. He proceeded to his MD (London) and Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and later to the Chair of Medicine in 1968. Prof. Akinkugbe, who on promotion to a chair of medicine at the University of Ibadan at the age of 35years became the first Professor of medicine that has ever been appointed by any African University.
He later became the Dean of Medicine at Ibadan, Foundation Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Vice-Chancellor Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, and in the 1980s Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council of the University of Port Harcourt. He was the foundation Chair of JAMB and Chair of the Management Board, University College Hospital, Ibadan.
He has served on many World Health Organization Expert Committees on Cardiovascular Diseases and Health Manpower Development and on the prestigious WHO Global Advisory Committee on Health Research. He was also for many years on the Scientific Advisory Panel of the Ciba Foundation in London.
He has held Visiting Professorships of Medicine at Harvard (1974-75), Oxford (Field Marshal Alexander Department of Cardiovascular Medicine (1981-82) when he was Visiting Fellow at Balliol, and at the University of Cape Town (1994). He has served on many national and international Commissions including the University Grants Commission in Uganda and Chair the Planning Committee of Ondo State University and University of Abuja.
Prof. Akinkugbe has been on the Editorial Board of several international journals, including Journal of Hypertension and Kidney International. He was on the Council of the International Society of Hypertension and of the World Heart Federation for many years. He has published over 100 scientific papers, notably in Hypertension, Kidney Disease and allied specialties. He co-authored Falase’s “A Compendium of Clinicalx Medicine”. He has given over 100 named, invited and public lectures over a period of 40 years.
The former Pro-Chancellor has Hon. DSc. from eight Nigerian universities, including Ibadan and was elected Hon. Fellow of Balliol College in Oxford in 2007.
He is also a recipient of many local, national and international awards such as: the Searle Distinguished Research Award, Boehringer Ingelheim Award of the International Society of Hypertension, Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM), Civil Honours of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON – 1979), Federal Republic of Nigeria (CFR – 2004). The professor of Medicine also received the Lifetime Achievement Recipient Award of the Nigerian Healthcare Excellence Award held in Lagos recently.
He was until recently Chair of the Board of Trustees, Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo and President and Chair, Board of Trustees Bells University of Technology, Ota. He is currently Chair, Board of Trustees, Kola Daisi University, Ibadan and was recently Chair of the Governing Council of the University of Medical Sciences in Ondo.
Apart from his notable achievements in the academia, the ex-VC also holds traditional chieftaincy titles in Ife, Ibadan Ondo & Ijebu-Igbo.
His marriage to Professor Folasade M. Akinkugbe is blessed with children.
