Women’s health cannot be mentioned in Nigeria or in Africa without the inclusion of a great man who has distinguished himself amongst his colleagues. The contribution of Dr. Adinma in Mother and Child Health Care is incredibly amazing.
Currently the President of PAC-Net Women’s Health and Youth Development Initiative, a non-governmental organization that promote, protect and uplift women’s reproductive Health and right, and promote youth leadership and development, Prof. J.I.B Adinma is also a member of the board of trustees of the association for the advancement of family planning and also a member of the board of trustees of Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON).
A native of Neni in Anaocha LG Area of Anambra State, Prof Adinma was born on 8th of September 1954. He had most of his primary education in Northern Nigeria and his secondary education at St Theresa’s College Nsukka obtaining his WAEC in 1972. In 1973, he commenced his HSC course at the Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS) Onitsha, then proceeded to study Medicine at the University of Nigeria in the same year 1973. He obtained his basic Degree in Medicine (BM, BCh) from the University of Nigeria 1979. Following the one year pre-registration Houseman-ship at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, he went for his National Youth Service Corp Programme with the Nigerian Navy (NNS Akaso) in Port Harcourt before starting his Residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital in 1981 and Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in 1986.
He once worked as a locum Consultant with Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Ihiala (Anambra State), Resident Consultant in Obs & Gynae at the Iyi Enu Mission Hospital Ogidi (Anambra), before joining Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital as a lecturer in 1990. He has remained a Professor and Honorable Member of the Senate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University till date.
Prof. Adinma is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS); Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS) Chicago, USA; Fellow of the International Society of Surgeons (FISS) Basel Switzerland; Fellow of the Institute of Health Educator of Nigeria (FIHEN); Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences; Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (FAAAS); as well as membership of several bodies, societies and organizations including the Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON) where he served as the 16th National President.
Apart from being a member of the board of trustees of SOGON, he has been a member of the board of National Hospital Abuja and Interim Chairman of the Governing Council of the College of Health Technology Obosi, Anambra State.
In 2015, he was appointed by the President of FIGO, elected as the Vice President of Africa Arab Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AAFOG) in Cape Town and South Africa and in 2020, he became Foundation President of the Association of West African Societies of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AWASOG/WACOG) following the inauguration of the society at Abuja. He has worked as a Consultant to many International and Supra National Agencies including WHO, UNICEF, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Planned Parenthood Global/Planned Parenthood Federation of America, and Partnership for Transformation of Health System (PATHS2), IPAS and Society for Family Health (SFH).
Prof. Adinma is a recipient of so many nominations and awards. He won Justice of Peace (JP) by Noble Peace Maker (NPM) Awards (2017), International Who’s Who of Contemporary Achievement (5th edition, 13th edition and 16th edition), Outstanding People of the 20th century and so many other awards including those from Rotary Club, several societies and Churches.
Prof. Adinma is presently the Director of Ekwueme Center for Multi-Disciplinary Research (ECMR) of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, He initiated and currently directs the Center for Health and Allied Legal and Demographical Development Research and Training (CHALADDRAT) of the same university. He has 140 published works to his name alongside several others at various stages of assessment for publication.
Apart from the academic qualifications, Prof. Adinma holds the traditional title of Igiligi Udo Amichi bestowed to him by the traditional ruler of Amichi (Anambra), in recognition of his selfless service to humanity and women’s health.
