The Chairman of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Group of the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria (PMG-MAN) and Fidson Healthcare CEO, Dr. Fidelis Ayebae, has tasked the government to leverage on the Trade Related Aspects of International Property Rights (TRIPS) to set up a Committee on National Medicine Security (CONMS).
Ayebae who was represented by the former chairman of the association, Mr. OkeyAkpa, made this request while delivering the chairman’s keynote address at the 5th Nigeria Pharma Manufacturing Expo held in Lagos.
Ayebae noted that the overdependence on imported medicine equals exportation of jobs to other countries and import poverty to Nigeria, exertion of pressure on the foreign reserve and give windows for substandard medicine.
In his words, the committee will be responsible for the expansion of Local Pharmaceuticals, sustenance of domestic preference policy, enhancement of Import Prohibition List (IPL) and Executive Order 003, supporting the NAFDAC 5+5 validity policy and facilitating the provision of 300 billion Export Intervention Fund.
Ayebae further stressed that the attainment of national sufficiency and drug security will aid the actualization Sustainable Development Goals 1, 3, 8, and 9 respectively.
